The period between now and 2040 requires a bigger change in the energy mix than it has in the past 25 years.In the new policy scenario of the world energy outlook 2017, we believe that natural gas will lead the energy transition, while renewable energy and energy efficiency will also see rapid development.In this scenario, natural gas would grow to a quarter of global energy demand by 2040, making it the second largest energy source in the world (after oil).In resource-rich regions, such as the Middle East, expanding the use of natural gas is relatively easy, especially if it replaces oil.In the United States, a large supply of natural gas could sustain the high share of gas-fired power plants in the generation sector by 2040, even without the introduction of national restrictions on coal use.
